STAATSKAPELLE DRESDEN
Description:
This is great, Bhm & Dresden's 1979 Farewell Live has seen the light of day! Karl Bhm (1894-1981) became General Director of the Staatskapelle Dresden in 1934 and served until 1943. During his tenure, he gave the world premieres of Richard Strauss's operas "The Silent Woman" and "Daphne," and graced the prewar German music scene with his brilliant performances. The broadcast recordings were mainly small pieces due to time constraints imposed by the use of acetate recordings. These were collected in "Edition Staatskapelle Dresden Vol. 43," a collection of popular small works conducted by Bhm, but from the 1941-2 season, the development of magnetic tape made it possible to broadcast symphonic movements without cuts or interruptions. A new page was begun by using the stage of the Dresden Sanitary Museum as a broadcasting studio, and the memorable first of these was Schubert's Symphony No. 5 conducted by Bhm. You can listen to it here. It is interesting to note that Bhm gave his musical self-portrait in a radio program conducted by the North German Radio in October 1956. The program is rich with interesting stories, including memories of Richard Strauss. The program also includes a waltz from "The Knight of the Roses" conducted by Bhm and the finale of the opera "Daphne" dedicated to Bhm.Even more noteworthy is the fact that Bhm's farewell concert, which he gave in his final years at the Palace of Culture Hall in Dresden on January 12, 1979, saw the light of day. It is also fascinating that the pieces are Schubert's two great symphonies, "Unfinished" and "Great". Until now, only "Great" had been released by DG, but this time "Unfinished," which was performed at the same time, was added to the program. The recording of Bhm's moving speech to the endless applause after the performance is also valuable. This is a masterpiece of "Unfinished" and "Great" in one disc. Highly recommended.
