LINDA DI CHAMOUNIX, an opera in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848), was composed for his 1842 engagement with the royal court in Vienna. The first performance took place on May 19 at the K?rntnertortheater. Offering to intervene for the tenant farmer Antonio, Marquis of Boisfleury tries to beguile his daughter Linda, who is herself in love with a Viscount posing as a poor artist named Carlo. Escaping her seducer to a place of residence in Paris provided by the now-revealed Viscount, she later discovers that he will marry another woman. Her ensuing madness is only cured when the wedding is called off and he admits his love for her. Finding a gift of flowers from Carlo, she sings her opening Act I aria, O LUCE DI QUEST' ANIMA (OH GUIDING STAR OF LOVE). Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp. Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set): Solo Sop.
